Gospic Croatia ended their winless start to the EuroLeague Women on Wednesday evening with a convincing triumph over ESB Lille Metropole. The Croatian team destroyed the French outfit in the first quarter, outscoring them 35-11 to pave the way for an 85-63 win. Andja Jelavic poured in 19 points and Carla Thomas added 17 in the rout. Gospic reeled off the game's first 11 points. Jelavic's three-point play started the proceedings and that was followed by two straight three-balls from Lamisha Augustine. Jelavic capped the spurt with a jumper for an 11-0 lead two minutes into the contest. When Thomas drilled a jump shot with 4:46 to go in the first quarter, Gospic had a commanding 23-5 advantage. The game was effectively over when the hosts finished the opening frame with a 9-0 run for a 35-11 lead. At half-time, the hosts led 53-25 and by the end of the third quarter, they were on top 73-45. Gospic hit 14 of 32 shots from long range with Thomas five of six, while Lille were just three of 13. Both teams are now 1-5 in Group B. |
