Galatasaray clinched a spot in the EuroLeague Women Eighth-Final Play-offs with a 71-55 home triumph over TTT Riga on Thursday.
The Turkish club improved to 4-3 in Group A and will now attempt to improve their standing over the final three weeks of the Qualifying Round.
Galatasaray seized the initiative in the first 13 minutes when they opened up a 25-10 lead.
Belarus center Yelena Leuchanka scored 10 of her 13 points in that impressive start to the game for the home side.
The Latvian club closed the gap to 36-30 after a basket by Lisa Willis but Katie Douglas made two free-throws and Tugba Palazoglu connected from behind the arc for an 11-point Gala advantage.
Riga shaved the deficit to seven points but a Douglas jumper sparked a 14-2 Galatasaray run and put the result beyond doubt.
Douglas finished with 17 points and Sophia Young 15 for Galatasaray.
Willis had 17 points for the Latvian club, which slumped to 1-6 with the setback.
Riga have only a flicker of hope of making it to the Eighth-Finals Play-offs.
The Latvian club has to win its final three games and have Cras Basket Taranto lose their remaining three contests to leave both sides with four wins and six defeats.
However, Riga would need to win by more than 11 at Cras in Italy to win a potential goal differential tie-breaker.
Galatasaray head coach Zafer Kalaycıoğlu:
In our groupe I don’t think there is an easy game, this game was also important for us. Maybe we were good in defence tonight but we could be better in offence. Now we have four wins and three loss and three games that we are going to play. All of the remaining games are hard games, especially next game that we are going to play in Lithuania with TEO Vilnius is going to be very difficult because they have no win until now. They will try to win one game so it is a hard game and we shall be ready for that game for next week to have the advantage to stay at the third place in the group.
Galatasaray Center Ivana Vecerova:
I think we started the game well. And after that we did a good defence and we played better basketball than them. But also we had some moments when we let them have some open shots. This was our only mistake, we didn’t have more mistakes and won the game. This year the EuroLeague Women is even harder, every team is strong, every game, every point is very important. We should work hard try to win the rest of our games.
TTT Riga Center Aija Brumermane:
Tonight was a very important game for us but we made a lot of mistakes and couldn’t win. We lost a lot of balls and they had their fast breaks. Our defence wasn’t the best either. If we had worked harder we could have won. I don’t know why but we weren’t ready for this game.
