GAME REPORT

Spain Blow Out Germany To Secure 2nd Place

Spain used a near perfect second quarter to turn a close game into a blowout as they crushed Germany 83-56 at the U18 European Championship Men 2009 in Metz, France.

The result meant that Spain secured second place in Group B with Germany in third.

The game was tied at 21 after the first quarter with Germany striking first, hitting five of their first six three-point attempts for a 16-11 edge.

But Kay Blumel's side couldn't buy a shot from inside the arc - hitting just eight of 43 attempts from two-point range - and Spain took full advantage of that, outscoring them 24-5 in the second quarter for a 45-26 half-time score and effectively put the game out of reach.

Joan Sastre and Josep Franch combined for 18 first-half points and the latter gave the Spaniards their first double-digit lead, 36-26, on a three-pointer with 2:51 left before the break.

Germany kept hitting their three-pointers at a reasonable rate in the third quarter, but Spain matched them in that department while at the same time doing a much better job from two-point range.

That enabled them to stretch their lead to 64-44 going into the final quarter when the bench closed out the game.

Franch led five players in double-figures with 15 points.
