Panellinios Cruise To Victory

Panellinios enjoyed a comfortable 69-54 victory over Telekom Baskets in the first leg of their EuroCup first qualifying round tie on Tuesday night.

The Greeks had built a double-digit advantage just after midway through the first quarter and there seemed little doubt about the result for the rest of the way as they held their German visitors at arm's length.

There was only one spell when it seemed like Panellinios were in danger of blowing their lead.

Having led 42-24 just after half-time, a little complacency seemed to set in as they let Telekom chip away at the lead.

Earl Rowland's three-pointer midway through the period sparked a 9-0 run - capped by Brandon Bowman's dunk - that cut Panellinios' advantage to single figures, 46-39.

Timothy Clifford made a three-pointer with 1:11 left in the period that made it 47-42 but they got no closer as Stevan Nadjfeji nailed a three-pointer to give the hosts some breathing room and an 11-3 run early in the fourth quarter effectively sealed the win.

Telekom's Bowman scored the final points of the game with a jump shot one second from time, but it seems unlikely to make a difference as they face a daunting task of overturning a 15-point deficit next week in Bonn.

Four players scored in double figures for Panellinios as Jurica Golemac poured in 16, Anthony Grundy had 14 and Djuro Ostojic and Australia international Brad Newley scored 12 each.

Rowland was the only Telekom player to reach double figures with 11.
