EiffelTowers Den Bosch took control of second place in EuroChallenge Top 16 Group I with a 67-58 win over Belgacom Liege Basket on Tuesday night.
Taron Downey led with way with 18 points - 15 of them from nine three-point attempts - while Lawrence Abney came up big at both ends with 10 points and 16 rebounds in the win.
In a game that was close most of the way, Den Bosch took the lead, 53-52, on Downey's three-pointer with 5:21 left to go and did not look back as they outscored the visitors 15-6 over the final five minutes.
Anthony Richardson punished a Christopher Hill turnover with an emphatic dunk to continue the run, before a three-pointer from Kees Akerboom and a lay-up from Richardson finished Liege off.
Richardson finished with 13 points while Akerboom made four of seven from three-point range to account for all 12 of his.
Larry Owens led three Liege players scoring in double figures as Hill collected 15 and Justin Cage 13.
The win leaves Den Bosch alone at 2-2 in Group I, moving above Telekom Baskets Bonn who lost 71-54 to group leaders Cholet Basket to join Liege at 1-3.
Tom Johnson, Head Coach (Belgacom Liege):
"We knew it would be difficult, because we expected them to shoot better at home than they did in Liège. They made some crucial shots and we couldn't match them offensively. We made too many mistakes, which was a shame, because I was satisfied with our energy from the start."
Christopher Hill, Player(Belgacom Liege):
"They played with a lot of energy and we made too many errors. We weren't too smart offensively."
Don Beck, Head Coach (EiffelTowers):
"Belgacom Liège are a great team, for which I have a lot of respect. Tom is doing a great job. They really are a very tough team. As for us, I was very happy with the players, that came from the bench. Also our big guys did a good job on the boards. I was especially pleased with our 18 assists, which means we played good team basketball."
Taron Downey, Player (EiffelTowers):
"I probably had my best EuroChallenge game, which was down to my team mates finding me. They gave me the looks and I knocked them down."
