Tartu Rock Stun CSK-VVS On The Road
Tartu University Rock trailed by five points heading into the final quarter at CSK-VVS Samara but won 66-58 on Tuesday - the opening night of the EuroChallenge Regular Season.
Tanoka Beard poured in 19 points and pulled down eight rebounds for the visitors from Estonia, a team that reached the EuroCup Final Four last season.
CSK-VVS, a side that is again being coached by former Russia international Valeriy Tikhonenko, trailed 39-33 at half-time but turned up the defensive pressure after the interval and held Tartu to just six points to lead 50-45.
Coach Üllar Kerde's outfit turned on the style over the last 10 minutes, though, outscoring CSK-VVS 21-8 to claim an impressive win on the road.
Tartu also got a good game from Estonia internationals Janar Talts (11 points, eight rebounds) and Gert Kullamäe.
The latter scored all 12 of his points on four-of-six shooting from behind the arc.
Marquee Perry poured in a game-high 21 in defeat.
Tartu outrebounded CSK-VVS 39-30. Kerde's team overcame 22 turnovers to win.
Quotes CSK-VVS vs. Tartu Rock
Head coach of Tartu Rock, Ullar Kerde:
"I am satisfied with the result. The team won and that's the most important thing. The game was difficult, Samara had more power but we reached victory because of how we approached the game. We played bad in the third quarter, but didn't quit. We showed that we can play as a team."
Head coach of CSK VVS-Samara, Valery Tikhonenko:
"We lost to Tartu Rock in our wish to win. Our main players didn't play well and didn't support Marque Perry. We showed bad percentage of 3 point shots (20/4) and didn't take the rebounds; even though Tartu are much ‘smaller' in height. Two players of Tartu Rock have played a great game: Tanoka Beard and Gert Kullamae. Of course, this loss is a bad result, but we still have five games to go. We have to keep on playing."
