GAME REPORT

EWE Baskets Made To Sweat But Overcome Olympia

EWE Baskets were made to sweat but they won 76-73 over Olympia Larissa of Greece in their EuroChallenge Regular Season Group E clash on Tuesday in Oldenburg.

The German team had a great start with Ruben Boumtje Boumtje and Je'Kel Foster each scoring 10 points in the first quarter as they opened up a 26-14 lead.

Three times the hosts went in front by 12 in the second quarter but Olympia refused to let them pull away and trailed 41-31 at half-time.

Early in the third quarter, a blowout looked as if it might be on the cards when a Foster three-point play stretched the EWE Baskets advantage to 46-31.

Olympia stayed within striking distance, however, and clawed their way back.

Two Michael King free throws for the visitors left them trailing only 58-54 with a quarter to play.

A King jumper pulled Olympia even closer at 65-63 with 6:12 to go in the contest but Boumtje Boumtje made a lay-up and Foster a three-ball, taking his tally to a team-high 18, as Oldenburg went back into a 70-63 lead.

Terrel Ray Castle's two free throws with 11 seconds remaining left EWE Baskets clinging to a 76-73 advantage.

Neither side scored again.

Castle had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds in defeat.

COACH QUOTES

EWE Baskets vs. Olympia Larissa

Predrag Krunic (coach Oldenburg):

"We had a great first quarter again. It was important to play with big confidence. Larissa are a good team and are playing in a high quality [domestic] league. In this close game we needed some good luck in the end. I´m glad that we started the Regular Season with a victory."

Rickey Paulding (Oldenburg):

"That was an important win for us. The game was very physical. I think this is typical in European Cup games. I´m glad we got this important win."

Giorgos Bartzokas (coach Larissa):

"I liked the atmosphere in this arena. We had an injured player in the first quarter and were not able to bring Corey Belser back onto the court. In the beginning we did not have enough concentration. In the European Cup games things are different than in the Greek league. It took us too long to adjust our game."

Sven Schultze (Olympia Larissa):

"We lost the last five games in the same way. After a slow start we try to close the gap but in the end it is not enough for us. Congratulations to Oldenburg."
