Quincy Taylor erupted for 24 points to help Limassol club Proteas EKA AEL finish level at 65-65 in the first leg of their EuroChallenge Qualifying Round 1 clash at BC Donetsk on Tuesday.
The Ukrainian team went on top 52-48 late in the third quarter and was still in front at 54-49 at the start of the fourth but wasn't able to press home the advantage as the visitors from Cyprus battled back.
When Bosnia and Herzegovina big man Haris Mujezinovic made one of two at the line midway through the fourth quarter, the visitors led 63-39.
They managed to score just two points the rest of the way, however, with Anthony Tucker's two free throws at the end for Donetsk leaving the tie evenly poised.
The second leg will be played next week in Limassol.
Tucker had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Ukrainian team that is coached by former Proteas EKA AEL boss Igors Miglinieks.
Proteas EKA AEL finished fourth in last season's EuroCup.
