GAME REPORT

Gambrinus Survive To Force Game Three Against Bourges

Gambrinus Sika Brno edged Bourges 61-59 in the Czech Republic on Friday night to force a deciding third game in the EuroLeague Women back in France next week.

Bourges looked to be in good shape when they led 56-51 with 5:29 remaining.

Brno stormed back with Hamchetou Maiga Ba hitting the go-ahead basket 1:55 from the end to make it 57-56.

Maiga Ba followed with another lay-up to cap the 8-0 run.

Celine Dumerc drilled a jumper to end the Bourges drought which had lasted four and a half minutes and cut the deficit to 59-58 and also to set up a thrilling finish.

The game would end up being decided at the free throw line.

With 15 seconds to play, Maiga Ba split a pair of free throws and Bourges rebounded the miss.

Maiga Ba was then called for a foul on Bourges center Alessandra, but the Brazilian made just one of two with four seconds to go.

After a Gambrinus timeout, Bourges fouled Tamika Whitmore and the American forward made the first but missed the second of shots at the charity stripe.

Cathy Melain grabbed the rebound, rushed the ball up the floor and attempted a three but was off target as Brno fans breathed a sigh of relief.

Maiga Ba had 17 points and Eva Viteckova 14 for Gambrinus, while Dumerc poured in 16 for Bourges.

COACH QUOTES

Quotes Gambrinus vs. Bourges Basket

Vlastimil Havlík Brno Assistant Coach:

"We were the luckier team. It was a very tough game. We improved our defence and rebounds from the first game in France. But Bourges was more aggressive in rebounds. We played better on offence today too. I am very satisfied with Zirkova. She was a long time injured and today helped us."

Pierre Vincent Bourges Head Coach:

"We made to many mistakes on defence. We tried to play easy basketball. In the end the game was about conditions. I expected a very tough game. Last year we lost here in Brno in the semifinals of EuroLeague Women in overtime. Brno finished on the second place and have a good team. From my view we will play a tough game on Wednesday in France again."
