Spartak Brush Aside Fenerbahce

Spartak Moscow Region returned to their imperious best on Wednesday and thrashed Fenerbahce in the EuroLeague Women.

Coming off an upset defeat at TEO Vilnius, Spartak got big contributions from all of their star-studded international contingent.

Australia center Jackson hit five of six from three-point range on her way to a game-high 19 points while USA Olympic gold medal winner Sylvia Fowles poured in 18 and grabbed 11 rebounds - also a game high.

Fenerbahce led for much of the first quarter but Spartak went in front for good on a basket from Sue Bird to make it 12-10.

After Fowles split one of two at the line, Russia international Irina Osipova's layup extended the advantage to 15-10.

Spartak didn't deliver the hammer blow until a spurt early in the second quarter.

On top 17-15, Bird stole the ball away from Esmeral Tuncluer and passed ahead to her fellow USA superstar Diana Taurasi who scored on a layup.

Jackson followed with two jump shots - the first a three-ball - to extend the lead to 24-15.

Nicole Powell tried to stop the bleeding for Fenerbahce with a jump shot, but her team was hemorrhaging.

Taurasi replied with a lay-up and Bird followed with a three-ball before feeding Fowles for a lay-up and a three-point play.

Fowles then added another lay-up.

With 3:36 to go in the first half, Spartak had a 34-17 stranglehold on the game.

They took a 43-24 lead to half-time and continued to pile on the misery for Fener once the third quarter began.

Free-spirit Taurasi had 14 points, eight rebounds and seven assists with eight turnovers while the excellent Bird finished with 10 points, six assists, four rebounds and just one turnover.

Bird also came up with three steals.

Powell finished with 14 points and five rebounds.
