Fowles Fuels Spartak Rout Of Montpellier

Team USA center Sylvia Fowles erupted for 25 points and also pulled down 17 rebounds to help fire Spartak Moscow Region to a 93-70 win at Lattes Montpellier.

Spartak never trailed in the EuroLeague  Women Group D contest as they improved to 4-1 while dropping Montpellier to 0-5.

Fowles began the game with a bucket and fellow United States Olympian Diana Taurasi followed with a three-pointer to set the tone for a straight-forward triumph.

The 1.98m center Fowles, who was called 'Big Syl' during her time at Louisiana State University, had eight points by the end of the first quarter as Spartak led 27-14.

Australia superstar Lauren Jackson, meanwhile, scored six in the opening frame.

After Sue Bird drilled back-to-back three-pointers in the space of 27 seconds in the final minute of the second quarter, Spartak had a 51-31 stranglehold on the game and were well on their way to a big victory.

Taurasi had 17 points for Spartak, who enjoyed a 55-29 hegemony on the boards.

Jackson had nine rebounds to go with her 12 points.

Bird was excellent as always, scoring nine points and handing out eight assists with just two turnovers.

Spartak won the last two European crowns under Natalia Hejkova.

New coach László Rátgéber could be about to lead the team to a third win in a row.

Sheana Mosch scored 21 points and pulled down six boards for Lattes Montpellier.
