Spanish champions Ros Casares began their season with a Super Cup blowout win over FEVE San Jose Leon and on Wednesday they battered Lotos PKO BP in the EuroLeague Women opener for both sides.
Brazil center Erika had 21 points and 11 rebounds and Spain star Amaya Valdemoro poured in 19, handed out seven assists and came up with five steals as Ros rocked their Polish opponents, 93-51.
Delish Milton Jones had not arrived in Spain in time for the Super Cup win but she is now with the Valencia team and the USA Olympic gold medal winner proved her worth again with 10 points. Like Valdemoro, Milton-Jones came up with five steals in a sterling defensive effort for new coach Ismael Canto.
Canto, who has played to rave reviews to his new charges, has decided that the team needs to play up-tempo with the kind of ‘40 minutes of hell' defense that would make former Arkansas Razorbacks and Panama national team coach Nolan Richardson proud.
Because Ros have seasoned internationals throughout their roster, the plan is to constantly rotate the players to keep fresh bodies on the court at all times.
The fast game saw Ros force Lotos PKO BP into 37 turnovers.
Club captain Elisa Aguilar, who celebrated her 32nd birthday on Wednesday, smiled after the triumph and said: "We have been very intense from the start and in the EuroLeague, you cannot lose concentration.
"It´s important for us to win all of our games at La Fonteta. This is a good win for us today."
Ivana Matovic scored 15 points and Alana Beard 11 for Lotos PKO BP.
