Stepanova Shines As Ekaterinburg Rout Jolly JBS
// 19 November 2008

Maria Stepanova poured in 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds for new club UMMC Ekaterinburg on Wednesday as they thrashed Jolly JBS Sibenik in Russia.

Poland international Agnieszka Bibrzycka led undefeated Ekaterinburg with 18 points as they rolled to a 100-70 triumph - their sixth in a row in Europe this season.

Ekaterinburg hit eight of 11 shots from behind the arc.

The outcome was decided early on.

USA Olympic star Cappie Pondexter and Bibrzycka started the game with three-pointers and they Laurent Buffard's team led 8-0 after French power forward/center Sandrine Gruda scored.

By the time Stepanova, who was surprisingly released by long-time club CSKA Moscow recently, hit a jump shot to take her tally to nine, Ekaterinburg had a 35-18 stranglehold on the game and there were still three quarters to play.

Russia international Stepanova had scored Ekaterinburg's last seven points of the opening frame.

The home side extended  their lead to 60-29 by half-time and cruised the rest of the way.

The Russian outfit out-rebounded Jolly JBS 41-32.

Jolly JBS have dropped to 2-4 in Group C.

Quotes UMMC Ekaterinburg vs. Jolly JBS Sibenik
// 19 November 2008

UMMC Head Coach Laurent Buffard:

"We have won the first half with good advantage, agressive defense and a high shooting percentage. However we lowered our efforts in the second half. It was difficult to keep concentrated having a 30-point advantage. On Monday we are to play a very tense match and we mustn't make such a mistake. All the players worked on the court tonight in order to feel the game."

Sibenik Head Coach Stipe Bralic:

"The Ekaterinburg team is much stronger, than ours, it has such world basketball stars as Cappie Pondexter, Sandrine Gruda, Asjha Jones and Maria Stepanova. To my opinion, it's the best team in the world."
