CSKA Pile On The Misery
For TTT Riga

CSKA Moscow stormed to their second big win in the EuroLeague Women with an 89-48 drubbing of TTT Riga in Latvia on Wednesday.

Gundars Vetra's team delivered a first-quarter knockout punch, outscoring Riga 27-9.

Trailing 44-27 at half-time, TTT Riga were then blown away in the third quarter when CSKA held them to just six points and opened up a 66-33 lead.

Ann Wauters finished with a game-high 19 points for CSKA, who also got 17 from Katie Douglas.

Becky Hammon played 28 minutes for CSKA and scored seven points, handed out seven assists and pulled down six rebounds.

Her fellow Russia internationals and 2008 Olympic bronze-medal winners Ilona Korstin and Maria Stepanova each scored nine.

Essence Carson scored 12 points to lead Riga, who were just one of 18 (5.6%) from three-point range and 18 of 52 (34.6%) inside the arc.

TTT Riga were 86-71 losers at home to MBK Euroleasing in their opener last week.

Quotes TTT Riga vs CSKA
Moscow

Ainars Cukste,  coach, TTT Riga:

"We lost to a strong opponent. We had hoped for a more balanced game but not for mercy. Despite the heavy loss we have improved several things and we will continue to work to succeed. Players were a bit afraid in the beginning of the match and it took time to get into the game. The main reason of our defeat was the strong defense of CSKA. Vetra is a smart coach  and CSKA succeeded in their effort to neutralise our key players."

Aija Brumermane, player TTT Riga:

"Our defense is not as good yet as it can be. We were also passive in offense. We will concentrate to improve our weak parts. However, we improved our rebounding, we must continue to be better in the same way and it will bring good results."

Gundars Vētra, coach, CSKA Moscow:

"Our roster has more depth in defense this year. We missed some aggressiveness in defense last year. The arrivals of Douglas, McCarville and Gorbunova have already changed our team. We started our preparation with three players in the middle of September, then three Russian Olympians and Kathryn joined us. This was the first game when all our players were available to play. Everything happens „on the road" and we have still to work a lot to become better as a team. Our goals is to get into all possible finals - Russian Cup, Russian Superleague - and to qualify for the EuroLeague Final Four."

Kathryn Douglas, player CSKA Moscow:

"I was one of those lucky WNBA players to join my overseas team already in September. I got time to work with my teammates, my coach to get into rhythm. I am glad to play in CSKA. Obviously, one of our goals is to win the (EuroLeague) title."
