Evelien Callens and Stephanie Dubuc scored 17 points apiece to lead Belgium to a convincing 87-60 win over Bulgaria in Liege on Saturday. The Belgians, who improved to 2-2 in Group D while dropping the Bulgarians to 1-3, trailed early on but turned a 12-11 deficit with 4:14 remaining into a 23-14 advantage three minutes later. Callens and Dubuc started the spurt with a lay-up and a three-pointer, respectively. Bulgaria fought back and twice pulled level, the second time at 30-30 with 6:12 to go in the first half following a basket from Radostina Slavova. A Kathy Wambe lay-up then sparked a 10-0 run that put Belgium in front for good this time. The hosts went to the changing rooms leading 41-31 and they went in front by as many as 13 in the third quarter. The home side outscored Bulgaria 25-10 over the final 10 minutes for a comprehensive triumph. Gergana Branzova-Erdeney had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Bulgaria. |
