Hungary Rock Romania

Hungary put their agonizing overtime defeat to France behind them and hammered Romania on Wednesday to keep alive their faint hopes of direct qualification for the EuroBasket Women.

The Hungarians won 85-59 with Zsófia Fegyverneky's 20 points leading the way.

The success means that Hungary are now 4-3.

While they cannot overcome Slovakia to finish second in Group C, they can hope to be the best third-place team in the four Division A groups.

That would be good enough to reach the final round next year in Riga, Latvia.

Hungary only led 35-33 at half-time but outscored Romania 29-14 in the third quarter and 21-12 in the fourth for the decisive triumph.
Quotes Hungary vs. Romania
// 10 September 2008

László Rátgéber, Hungary coach:

"It was our seventh game in a row, we were so tired but Miskolc fans helped us to get closer to our goal. It is more than 100% that we have done with this team. And the most important thing is that we can finally talk about Hungarian women basketball again."

Dan Moraru, Romania coach:

"Unfortunatelly there is a huge experience gap between our starters and the bench players. That is why we lost like this today."
