Slovakia Dominate Boards In Big Win At Romania
// 06 September 2008

Zuzana Zirková poured in 30 points to help fire Slovakia to a resounding 83-67 triumph at Romania in EuroBasket Women qualifying Group C action on Saturday.

The Slovakians improved to 4-3 with the success and tightened their grip on second place with third-top Hungary facing leaders France later in the day.

Romania slumped to a fifth defeat in six games.

The Romanians, playing at home in Arad, held a 12-9 advantage almost four minutes into the contest after two free throws from center Bianca Vescan.

Zirkova made two free throws at the start of a 7-0 spurt that she capped with a jump shot with 2:56 to go in the first quarter and Slovakia were on top the rest of the way, though they didn't pull away until the third quarter.

In front at 42-38, a Zirkova jumper ignited a 12-3 Slovakia run that left her team in command at 54-41.

They were never under threat again.

Slovakia destroyed Romania on the boards, 46-27.

Lucia Lásková had a team-high seven boards to go with her six points for Slovakia.

The Slovakians were decisive winners and would have won even more convincingly had they not made just 12 of 21 (57.1%) at the free throw line.

Maria Pascalau had 19 points and 12 rebounds for Romania.
