Germans Upset Ukraine In Group A
// 06 September 2008

Germany upset Ukraine 74-65 on Saturday for their first victory in EuroBasket Women Qualifying Group A.

Anne Breitreiner had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Germans, who won despite a 22-point, nine-rebound performance from Ukraine's Olexandra Gorbunova.

Germany set the tone early by outscoring Ukraine 22-13 in the opening quarter and they extended the lead to 41-26 by half-time.

The Germans twice went in front by 18 in the third quarter, the second time at 60-42 after a three-point play by Breitreiner.

A Breitreiner lay-up then stretched the advantage to 65-46 with 6:43 remaining in the game.

Ukraine were able to reduce the deficit to nine in the final period, but got no closer.

The setback is a big one for Ukraine, who are chasing one of the top two spots in the group but are now 4-3 behind Lithuania (5-2) and Israel (5-1).

Dorothea Richter had 14 points for the Germans, who out-rebounded Ukraine 43-35.

Quotes Germany vs. Ukraine
// 06 September 2008

Imre Szittya, Germany coach:

„Tonight we played like we always wanted to. We had a great first half defensively holding the Ukraine down to 26 points. That was the key for the victory. Katharina Kühn was a big help for us."

Dorothea Richter, Germany player:

„We finally made it! This was a ‚total‘ win by the team as we played and fought together. Hopefully this will give us a lift for the important game in Cardiff on Wednesday."

Volodymyr Bryukhovetsky, Ukraine coach:

„Today, Germany fought and we simply played. That was the main difference. The last quarter which we won shows that it was not a conditional problem for us tonight but rather a mental one."
