Spain Pip Serbia For Fifth
Josep Franch made two three-pointers in the final four minutes and two free throws with 14 seconds left to lead Spain to an 89-85 victory over Serbia to capture fifth place at the U18 European Championship Men.
The result gives Spain a spot in next summer's U19 FIBA World Championship according to FIBA regulations.
Franch scored 13 points as one of six players in double figures, including all five starters. Alberto Jodar led the way with 17 points, Ignacio Llovet had 16 and Adrian Laso collected 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Daniel Perez hit for 11 points and Jorge Santana tallied 10, including a free throw with four seconds left for the final scoreline.
Serbia, who led by nine points but also trailed by 14, were paced by 21 points and 11 rebounds by Bojan Subotic. Aleksandar Vhalovic added 15 points including a three-pointer which brought Serbia to within 86-85 with 15 seconds left before Franch's foul shots.
Kristers Zeidaks scored 17 points in helping Latvia repeat their victory over Russia, winning 71-69 for seventh place in a tight game throughout which saw Denis Polokhin miss a potential game-tying lay-up attempt at the buzzer. It was Zeidkas who hit the lay-up at the buzzer in the final Qualifying Round game which kept the Russians from reaching the semi-finals.
Turkey finished off their tournament with a victory for ninth place, beating Israel 95-72 as Turkey power forward Enes Kanter had another huge game with 22 points, 25 rebounds and three blocks.
In the game for 11th place, David Reginald Cournooh scored 16 points as Italy knocked off Ukraine 84-68.
