Unbeaten Greece Conquer Lithuania
Hosts Greece moved into the semi-finals of the U18 European Championship Men with a perfect record after knocking off Lithuania 72-54.
Nikos Pappas collected 22 points to lead four players in double figures as George Vlassopoulos's team captured their fifth straight win to take top honours in their Qualifying Round Group.
Pappas also added six rebounds, four assists and five steals while Kostas Sloukas scored 14 points, Leonidas Kaselakis had 12 and Kostas Papanikolaou chipped in 10 points.
Tautvydas Slezas paced Lithunia with 13 points and 12 rebounds while Augustas Peciukevicius had 12 points and Gediminas Bertasius scored 10.
Lithuania had already booked their place in Saturday's semi-finals but dropped to 3-2 in the group.
Vitoldas Masalskis's Lithuanians led 7-5 early. But a Sloukas three-ball started an 11-0 run over 4:30 for a 16-7 lead. And Greece were ahead 22-11 after one period. Lithunia's defense stopped the Greeks for the first 3:30 of the second period and Matas Sapiega's triple completed an 8-0 run for a 22-19 deficit.
But Vlassopoulos's men turned their defense up a notch and Kaselakis and Pappas drained three-balls as Greece closed the first half on a 16-3 spurt for a 38-22 half-time cushion.
Papanikolaou's basket pushed the advantage to 45-26 before Slezas and Bertasius pulled the Lithuanians to within 45-35 with 3:30 left in the third. And Greece were ahead 52-38 after three periods. Bertasius knocked down another three-pointer and hit a free throw to cut the deficit to 56-48 with six minutes to play.
But the Greeks buckled down once more defensively for two minutes and Pappas pushed the margin back to 63-48. Lithuania would not get closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
