GAME REPORT

Italy Pound Israel

Nicolò Melli paced six players in double figures as Italy crushed Israel 93-57 at the U18 European Championship Men.

Melli poured in 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while Andrea De Nicolao collected 11 points, six rebounds and six assists in helping the Italians improve to 1-3 in the Qualifying Round Group E.

Lorenzo Panzini scored 16 points for Alessandro Ramagli's attack while Daniele Sandri had 14, Pasquale Paolisso 12 and Andrea Muner 10.

Israel dropped to 1-3 one day after surprising Lithuania. Yotam Shiran led Dan Franko's Israelis with 11 points.

Italy used the long ball to pull ahead early with Muner and De Nicolao both hitting from three-point range to build a 14-5 advantage. Melli and Sandri would later knock down three-balls as well, pushing the lead to 23-9 late in the first quarter, which ended with Ramagli's men ahead 23-11.

Ben Reis started the second period with a three-point play and Ron Sabag's basket kept Israel to within 25-16. But Panzini and Sandri both drained three-balls as the advantage grew to 37-19. Nadav Heyman scored five points the rest of the quarter to trim to deficit to 41-28 at intermission.

Italy stormed out of the break on a 10-0 run for a 51-28 advantage and Muner's foul shots pushed the lead to 26 points - 58-32. But Israel answered with a 13-5 spurt to close the third period down 63-45. Israel tried to get back into the game and Sabag's basket made it 66-51.

But Franko's men were no match for Italy as Melli dominated play and his three foul shots following a technical foul with five minutes left gave the Italians a 77-53 lead. And Ramagli's team finished the game on a 16-4 surge to complete the rout.
