Lang & Co Shoot France Over Russia
Nicolas Lang's three-point stroke guided France to a 70-61 victory over Russia to claim first place in Group C of the U18 European Championship Men.
Lang hit four triples in scoring 14 points while Alexis Tanghe had 14 points and Andrew Albicy chipped in 13 as France finished 2-1 in the group.
Russia were also 2-1 but finished second despite 13 points by Sergey Palkin, 12 from Alexey Murychev and 11 points by Vladimir Pichkurov. Evgeny Valiev finished with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Jérôme Julien Joseph Sanchez, Albicy and Paul Frederic Lacombe all knocked down three-balls to lead Philippe Ory's team to an 11-2 lead early. And it was 15-6 after a Thomas Celerier lay-up. But Murychev helped bring Russia to within 15-10 after one period. Denis Polokhin and Palkin sparked Alexey Vadeev's team back into the game and Valiev's triple knotted the contest at 26-26. But Albicy and Lang both hit from long range for a 32-28 France lead.
Leading 36-34, France went on a 7-0 run only to have Murychev score two baskets in a 9-0 Russia surge to even the game at 43-43. Lang, however, hit two three-pointers as France led 51-48 after three periods. Two more triples by Lang gave France a 58-52 advantage before Kirill Slepukha hit from long range to make it a 64-61 game.
Andrey Semenov committed a turnover with 30 seconds left and Albicy and Tanghe both made two foul shots in the final half-minute to decide the game.
