Bigs Keep Latvia's Semi-Final Hopes Alive

Latvia is still strong in the race to be part of the final four teams here, after a big 68-55 win over Russia.

The locals climbed to a 2-2 record while Russia dropped to 0-4 in Group F.

Just like yesterday Latvia took over the game right from the start and didn't allow Russia any look at the win.

If you thought after the huge win over France that Latvia is all about their perimeter players than today they showed their bigs can be as productive and decisive.

Janis Strelnieks led the winners with another big performance of 15 points, Andrejs Selakovs had 14, Sandis Silavs posted 12 points while Arturs Berzins wrote a ten point and 12 rebounds double-double.

Alexey Shved scored 13 points but missed all his six attempts from long range, while Valentin Novikov added 12.

"It's impossible to shoot two days in a row like we did against France," said Dairis Bertans who had today only nine points and missed all his shots from long range, but still made a a big contribution to the win.

"Today we tried to do different things, but what we kept from the game against France was the tough start. We wanted to take the lead right away and cruise on the momentum."

Berzins and Selakovs scored six each already in the first quarter to lead their team to a 20-8 first quarter lead.

Both teams combined only one three pointer out of 15 attempts, but Latvia found the way to get their advantage by sharing the ball.

By half time they held a 37-26 lead, while dishing ten assists on 15 made field goal.

The sides continued to struggle from long range, but Latvia's pressure on defense forced turnovers by Russia, that prevented a change in the gap.

Strelnieks with an acrobatic basket right before the fourth quarter lit up the fans and wrote a 54-40 Latvian lead.

Russia tried to move closer but when Artem Yakovenko missed a dunk that could have made it a nine point game, the momentum laid in Latvia's hands.

Latvia will take on Serbia in hope to write a third win in a row in the Qualifying Round, and maybe reach the semis. Russia will look for their first win in the second phase against Spain.
