GAME REPORT

Olympia Hold On For Win

Olympia had to sweat it out but finally won their EuroCup Qualifying Round Group C clash at home to Proteas EKA AEL.

Giorgos Bartzokas’ men led by 16 points late in the third quarter but the vistors held their nerve and cut into the deficit, twice pulling to within two before falling 74-70.

Proteas had the better start, jumping out to a 10-2 lead and holding that advantage at 16-8 following a three-point play by Milutin Aleksic with just 52 seconds to go in the opening period.

The hosts replied with a 9-0 run, Theophanis Koumbouras capping that with a three-ball for a 17-16 lead early in the second quarter.

The contest would remain close for the rest of the period and when Aleksic made just one of two at the line, his team carried a 36-35 lead to the changing rooms at half-time.

Olympia appeared to seize control midway through the third quarter.

Georgios Tsiaras drilled a shot from behind the arc to make it 45-40 and the hosts would go on to score nine straight points.

When Dimitar Angelov sank two at the charity stripe with 1:24 to go in the third quarter, Olympia enjoyed their biggest lead at 60-44.

Those free throws finished off an 18-4 run and a decisive victory looked to be in the cards.

An Aleksic jump shot steadied the nerves for Proteas EKA AEL who poured in nine consecutive points of their own to trail just 60-53 with 7:29 to play.

Another jumper by Bruno Sundov, taking his points haul to 15, cut the Olympia lead to 65-63.

They would get no closer, though.

Two Koumbouras free throws put Olympia back on top by four.

Aleksic was off target with a jumper five seconds from the end.

He followed his shot, but missed again as time expired.

Koumbouras finished with 20 points for the Greeks, while Aleksic had 19 in defeat.

Olympia and Proteas were both outstanding at the free throw line, with the former making 22 of 25 (88%) at the line on the night and the latter converting 21 of 26 (80.7%).
