Jekabsone-Zogota Leads Dynamo Past Faenza
// Mittwoch, 19. Dezember 2007

Anete Jekabsone-Zogota was again the star of the show as Dynamo Moscow downed Germano Zama Faenza 59-49 on Wednesday.

Jekabsone-Zogota, FIBA Europe Young Women's Player of the Year in 2005, came into the match averaging over 22 points per game in this season`s competition, and the Latvian again stood out with a game-high 19-point haul.

That was crucial in helping Dynamo pip Faenza, for whom Brazilian center Cintia Silva Dos Santos also had a fine game with 17 points, nine rebounds and three assists.

Dynamo ended a run of three successive EuroLeague Women defeats with an 92-86 victory over MiZo Pecs last time out, and the Russian side made it back-to-back wins with a home triumph on Wednesday to improve to a 4-3 record.

Italian side Faenza were bottom of Group D having lost four of their six matches so far, but they started the quicker of the two sides in the Russian capital, taking a 16-9 lead early on.

However, Dynamo battled back and they found themselves 27-23 ahead not long after.

The game remained a closely-fought affair after that though as neither side were able to gain a firm grip on the contest - at least until the final period.

There were just two points separating the two teams going into the last 10 minutes with Dynamo boasting a 42-40 advantage, but the Russian outfit were the more clinical in the closing stages and that earned them the spoils.

Aside from Jekabsone-Zogota, Dubravka Dacic (10 points and five rebounds), Sviatlana Volnaya (nine points and seven rebounds) and Tatiana Popova (nine points and five rebounds) all provided decent contributions for Dynamo, while for Paolo Rossi`s Faenza side, Ilisaine David added 10 points and four rebounds.

Quotes Dynamo vs. Germano Zama Faenza

Ainars Zvirgzdins, coach Dynamo:

“I like the style of the Italian team – aggressive defense and smart offense. Our previous game was much more spectacular, but tonight’s game was about being smart. I know that the results of Faenza depend pretty much on how Marija Eric fares; she is the real leader of team, but we managed to close her and she scored only five points. We made some steps forward since the beginning of the season, and today we won a very important game.”

Paolo Rossi, coach Germano Faenza:

“Tonight my players played pretty bad while the Dynamo players were very, very good. After this game two of the teams in our group are certain to qualify for the play-offs - Ros Casares and Dynamo. The rest four teams have their chances [for the other two spots] and will fight until the end.”
