Brno Made To Work For Win

The 2006 champions Gambrinus Brno were given a serious fight for three quarters but ended up collecting a dominating 85-68 victory over Kosit 2013 Kosice to remain undefeated in the EuroLeague Women.

Eva Viteckova poured in 20 points and her Czech Republic team-mate Petra Kulichova collected 15 points and 16 rebounds.

Jan Bobrovsky's team out-rebounded the Slovakians 49-25 while holding Kosice to 41% shooting from the floor and just six points in the fourth quarter.

Janel McCarville led Kosit with 20 points, Kathryn Gearlds had 18 and Ivana Jalcova chipped in 14 points in a losing cause.

The Slovakians fell to 1-2 in the group.

Kosit opened the game in fine form on the road, hitting four of their first five shots and then Gearlds and Jalcova knocked down three-points for a 16-13 lead.

The Czechs scored seven straight points and led 20-18 after one period.

Viteckova's three-ball gave Brno a 25-20 advantage but Gearlds hit a three-pointer of her own and Daniela Cikosova drained two long-balls for a 29-27 Kosit lead.

A 13-3 Czech surge gave Brno a 47-39 cushion before the Slovakians cut the deficit to 47-43 at the break.

Vladimir Karnay's team pulled ahead 48-46 on McCarville's three-point play and Kosit continued to fight and led 62-61 on Jalcova's lay-up late in the third quarter.

But Kulichova scored two baskets in the final 13 seconds to pull ahead 65-62 going into the fourth.

Gearlds hit a jumper to trim the deficit to 65-64 before the Czechs finally showed their dominance.

McCarville's three-point play initially stopped a Brno run for a 73-67 margin, but Viteckova and Zuzana Zirkova drained long balls to open a 12-point lead with four minutes left, and the Slovakians could never mount anything close to a come-back.
