Matovic Makes The Difference For Spartak
// 22 November 2007

Spartak Moscow Region produced a fine battling performance to secure their second Group C win with a 81-75 victory over Dexia W Namur.

In a stunning match which swung back and forth, Spartak eventually produced a late surge with Ivana Matovic pouring in 22 points and grabbing five rebounds.

Dexia started well and led 10-2 early on in the first quarter, but Spartak battled their way back to tie the quarter 21-21 with Lauren Jackson scoring seven points and Cathrine Kraayeveld netting eight points for Dexia.

In the second quarter, the home side began to take control and moved 35-32 ahead after a lay-up shot from Elzbieta Miedzik.

Krystyna Szymanska-Lara also poured in six points as Dexia went 45-38 in front, but two late free-throws from Sue Bird kept Spartak within touching distance as the half ended 45-40.

Dexia continued to exert the pressure in the third quarter and extended their lead to 54-45 after a Marjorie Capreaux lay-up.

However, once again Spartak battled back and following an eight-point run to move them within a point, they went in 58-55 ahead at the end of the third quarter after two successful free-throws from Diana Taurasi.

Spartak extended their lead to 64-60 in the fourth quarter, but successive three-point efforts from Kraayeveld and Szymanska-Lara put Dexia back in front.

Yet the Russians kept battling right until the end and a late surge which included four points from Matovic and another two successful free-throws from Taurasi sealed the win.
