GAME REPORT

Kosice Fight Back To Pip Dexia

Slovakian side Kosit 2013 Kosice claimed a hard-fought 70-62 win over Belgium's Dexia Namur in Group C of the EuroLeague Women.

Dexia went into the game hoping to build on their win over USVO last week and rushed into a 4-0 lead after a three-point shot from Elzbieta Miedzik.

However, Kosit fought back and eventually got themselves level at 19-19, before two successful free throws from Marjorie Carpreaux gave Dexia a 21-19 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Dexia then went 27-24 in front in the second quarter but once again Kosit refused to lie down and three-pointers from Kathryn Ann Gearlds and center Alena Kovacova saw them 38-32 ahead at half-time.

The Kosice side, who were beaten 62-60 by Spartak Moscow in their first game, bounced back in the third quarter.

Kosit claimed a 55-53 lead after crucial contributions from Luisa Michulkova and Ivana Jalcova gave them the advantage at the end of the period.

Two free throws from Jalcova almost saw Kosit break clear of the the Belgian side but Jennifer Fleischer hauled Dexia back into the game to reduce the deficit to two points with just over a minute remaining.

But Janel McCarville and Alena Kovacova showed their class in the dying stages, both netting free throws, to give Kosit the victory.

COACH QUOTES

Game Quotes - Kosit 2013 vs. Dexia Namur

Kosit 2013 coach, Vladimir Karnay:

“Michulkova and Gearlds were the top scoring players in the first half. We couldn't get into the rhythm of the game in the beginning of the third quarter and I don't know why. Thankfully our opponent didn't take advantage of our mistakes. Most important thing in the end of the match was keeping the lead, Namur fought back but we managed to hold on to our first victory in this year's EuroLeague."

Kosit 2013 player, Luisa Michulkova:

“It was tight from the beginning till the end and I'm really happy that we made it to victory. We had some troubles in the third quarter but we managed to hold on to the coach's orders and it worked well. I m glad that my good performance helped the team to claim its first victory.”

Dexia W Namur player, Krystyna Szymanska-Lara

“We failed to repeat our performance against Valenciennes. Also I thing that I didn't help the team as much as I did in the previous game. At the end of the game we were too nervous, our defence was too weak this time.”

Dexia W Namur coach, Jurgen van Meerbeeck:

“We tried to play as good as with Valenciennes, but the effort lasted only two quarters. I'm a bit dissapointed by some decisions made by the referees in the last quarter. I don't want to make excuses, we failed in the end of the match, we need to do better next time.”
