Fenerbahce Brushed Aside Late By CSKA

CSKA Moscow did not beat Fenerbahce by 40 points in Istanbul on Wednesday as they did on November 28 in the Russian capital, but they won nevertheless for their ninth consecutive win in EuroLeague Women Group D.

This game was close for three quarters before CSKA pulled away.

At the start of the fourth quarter, there was all to play for after Cappie Pondexter drove in for a lay-up to leave CSKA with a slender 57-54 advantage.

Rebecca Hammon, Ilona Korstin and Olga Arteshina made lay-ups in the order - Korstin added a free three for a three-point play - as CSKA reeled off seven straight points for a 64-54 lead.

The rout was on.

Svietlana Volnaya stopped the bleeding with a basket for Fenerbahce, but Wauters and Stepanova (16 pts, 7 rbs) combined to score the next 10 points on jump shots and lay-ups to build a commanding 74-56 lead with 4:04 left to play.

The rest of the contest was an exercise in damage limitation for Fenerbahce, who trimmed their deficit to nine points at 74-65 with 1:18 remaining but go no closer.

Tammy Sutton-Brown had 17 points, Volnaya 15 and Pondexter 14 for Fenerbahce, who dropped to 6-3 but remained in second place in Group A.
