GAME REPORT

Spain Too Much For Germans

Having had their party spoiled by Serbia in the preliminary round Spain got back to winning big taking an 82-56 score against a weak looking German side.

Ricky Rubio scored well again, taking 20 points, but had more support from his teammates tonight with Sergio De La Fuente scoring 15 points and big Pablo Aguilar getting a double-

double of 16 points and 11 boards.

The hosts were hoping to get back to their usual style of running up a big lead quickly, but were pegged back by the Germans who refused to fall behind.

For the hosts Aguilar was strong at both ends, pulling off a great block under his own basket against Philipp Schwethelm before hitting a trey with 1:37 remaining.

However Harris and Tibor Pleiß scored well to keep the score close, with a Schwethelm trey keeping it to within two points at the end of the first.

De La Fuente took up a starring role in the second phase, hitting 12 points whilst playing all ten minutes of the quarter to help Spain pull away to 42-35 at the break.

In the third Aguilar picked up where he’d left off in the first, doubling his points and rebounds tallies to 16 and 10, whilst Rubio and De La Fuente continued running up big numbers in the points department as Spain’s showman style returned.

A classy dunk by Pere Tomas had the party atmosphere running high in the arena before the final quarter got underway with the Germans 20 points adrift.

Spain relaxed slightly as the clock ticked down with them well in front, but still did enough to pull away to the final distance of 26 points.

After the game Aguilar felt that the style of play his side showed tonight could carry them through to the final: “We played how we wanted to tonight and it came out well for us. We really feel like we can beat anyone playing like this”.
