GAME REPORT

France Back On Track

A defiant France broke Spain's unbeaten run to keep alive their dreams of glory at the UMCOR U18 European Championship for Women.

With 5.8 seconds remaining, Spain's Laura Herrera had a chance to put her team into the lead but missed two free throws.

France's Diandra Tchatchouang grabbed the crucial rebound and then Ana Cata-Chitiga's

layup made the final score, 66-63.

It was an all-round team-effort by les Bleues with Tchatchouang, Cata-Chitiga and Camille Aubert all scoring 13 points.

Having lost to the Czech Republic on Tuesday, France had to beat the defending champions.

Spain went into the second quarter leading 25-19 thanks partly to Alba Torrens’ hot hand.

The Spanish failed to pull away, though, as France kept up the pace led by Ana Cata-Chitiga.

Torrens, who had 13 points in the first half, hit a three-ball to give Spain a 45-38 lead.

Spain kept their noses in front and Monica Jorge's three left them ahead, 53-42.

Les Bleues then hit the defending champions with a 13-0 run, with Camille Aubert scoring eight in that surge, to take a 55-53 lead with less than two minutes to play in the third quarter.

Laura Nicholls' jump-shot made it 55-55 going into the final stanza.

France went on a 7-2 run with six minutes left to play and coach Carlos Colinas called for a time-out.

Nicholls kept Spain in the game, scoring her team's next four points to make it 64-61 before Jimenez's layup made it a one-point game.

An offensive foul by Aubert gave Spain the ball with 18 seconds left.

Tchatchouang then fouled Herrera to send her to the line and she failed to convert.

"I knew I had to grabbed that rebound and once I got the ball, I held it strong," said Tchatchouang.

"We won this game thanks to our defense.

"It's a great win for us and we are extremely happy.

"After yesterday's result we thought it was very over but we are still very much alive in the tournament."
