GAME REPORT

Spain Battle Past Serbia

Spain survived a late comeback from Serbia to scrape out a 79-76 win and clinch top stop in Group D.

The Spanish led by as many as 13 points but found themselves leading 78-76 with just nine seconds remaining.

Maja Miljkovic (Serbia)
Maja Miljkovic was one reason Serbia had a chance to win it late.
Elisa Aguilar made one of two from the charity stripe and Amaya Valdemoro then fouled Monika Veselovski with 1.20 seconds left on the clock, which prevented the Serbians from attempting a three-pointer.

Veselovksi missed both free throws.

Spain looked to be in command with a 74-64 advantage four minutes from the end but their opponents went on a 10-2 run before coming up just short.

Aguilar poured in a game-high 22 points - 11 in the first quarter.

She had great support from Anna Montanana, who added 13 with Amaya Valdemoro pouring in 12.

Valdemoro was just four of 18 (22.2%) from the floor, but she did pull down eight rebounds, dish out seven assists and come up with four steals.

Serbia trailed 24-22 early in the second quarter when Spain went on a 15-4 run, with Nuria Martinez scoring eight points in that surge.

Led by Maja Miljkovic, Serbia reduced the arrears to 43-36 by half-time.

The Serbians then stunned the Spanish with an 11-0 run to lead 51-48 with less than six minutes to go in the third quarter.

Spain maintained their composure, though, with Aguilar spurred Spain fon.

They hit back with a 12-3 surge to go into the final stanza with a 60-54 advantage.

Serbia limited Spain to two points over the next two minutes as they cut the deficit 62-60.

Montanana's three-point play gave the Spaniards breathing space but they would end up battling to the end.

Spain outrebounded Serbia 40-30.

Serbia were superior shooting the ball from long range, hitting nine of 20 (45%) while their opponents were seven of 16 (43.8%).

Miljkovic led Serbia in scoring with 15 points.

The result means that Spain have qualified for the next round as group leaders while Croatia are already out of the tournament after losing to Belarus.

Spain take on Croatia in the final Group D game while Serbia meet Belarus.
