Belgium bounced back from a trouncing at the hands of Israel by besting Ukraine at home 72-69 Saturday night.
Axel Hervelle provided the scoring punch for the Belgians, totaling 21 points and 13 rebounds in the win.
It was Hervelle’s dunk with 50 seconds left that drew his side to within a point of Ukraine after trailing for the entire fourth quarter by as many as eight points.
On the ensuing possession for the eastern Europeans Artem Butskyy turned the ball over and Roel Moors converted it at the other end to give his side the lead with 45 seconds remaining.
Another turnover by the Ukrainians led to a Hervelle lay-up that put the Belgians up three and from there time ran out on Ukraine who could manage only a made free-throw the rest of the way though Oleksandr Skutyelnik did have a look from three-point range as time expired.
The win places Belgium a point off the top of Group C with three wins against just one loss.
