Belgium remained hot on the heels of Israel in Group C by beating Denmark for a second time in the Additional Qualifying Tournament for EuroBasket 2007.
The Belgians won 71-61 on Wednesday to improve their record to 4-1.
They will be hoping that Israel slip up in their game against Ukraine, otherwise the Belgians will have to beat the Israelis in their last game by a larger margin than 19 points to advance to the next stage of the qualifying round.
Israel won the first encounter against the Belgians, 85-66.
Belgium got off to a good start against Denmark and led 17-9 after the first quarter but the hosts, playing in front of their home fans, closed the gap to 26-22 by half-time.
Christophe Beghin and Belgium then dominated the third period, 28-14, to go into the last quarter with an 18-point advantage.
To the Danes’ credit, they fought like lions until the end and reduced the deficit, but with no victories so far they appear to be headed for the relegation play-offs.
Beghin was nine of 11 from the floor, including making his only attempt from three-point range, and converted all four opportunities from the free throw line to lead Belgium with 23 points.
Beghin, who finished with nine rebounds, was supported by Axel Hervelle’s 17 points and eight boards.
Hervelle was just four of 16 from the field, including a woeful two of 11 from the arc although he did sink seven of eight attempts from the stripe.
