FYROM Renew EuroBasket Hopes

FYROM moved to within a point of Estonia at the top of Group B of the additional qualifying round of EuroBasket after a 77-58 win over Sweden on Friday.

Vrbica Stefanov was the star for FYROM as he chalked up 22 points and six rebounds while his namesake Riste Stefanov contributed 19.

The first quarter was a tight affair as neither side managed to open a lead of more than three points and Sweden led by a single point at the hooter.

FYROM had the better of the opening stages of the second and led by six points with just two minutes to go but a quickfire 10-point burst from the Swedes gave them a four-point cushion at the halfway stage.

The match remained tight at the beginning of the third quarter but FYROM found another gear and outscored the Swedes by 14-4 in the final six minutes to take a 51-44 advantage into the fourth.

Sweden closed the gap to three early in the final quarter but a seven-point scoring run put the match beyond the Scandinavians and the eastern Europeans eased to victory in the closing minutes.
