GAME REPORT

Virtus Back On Track In Ankara

Virtus Bologna resembled a sinking ship on Sunday after suffering a third successive defeat in Lega A but they may have just turned their season around with a terrific come-from-behind victory at Turk Telekom in the EuroCup two days later.

Zare Markovski's men trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half with Erwin Dudley flashing his all-star credentials but the Italian team battled and ultimately prevailed 95-87 in the opening game of the quarter-final tie.

The best-of-three series now goes back to Bologna, where Virtus will look to secure their passage to the Final Four.

The Turkish side have been one of the best sides in Europe all season and when Dudley scored a lay-up midway through the second quarter for a 35-22 advantage, they looked to be on the way to victory.

But Virtus had the better finish to the first half, closing to 39-35 on a tap-in from Ilian Evtimov before goining to the locker room trailing 42-37.

Vlado Ilievski gave the visitors a spark on offense in the third quarter, taking his points haul to 16 for the contest.

But the Ankara outfit, which is also challenging for supremacy in Turkey's top flight, stayed in command.

When the dominating Dudley went up for another lay-up to take his personal tally to 23, they were in front at 67-59.

But Ilievski's basket trimmed the deficit to six at the end of the frame.

The hosts were then caught frozen in their tracks early in the final quarter when Brett Blizzard buried back-to-back three-balls to tie the game at 69-69.

A three-point play by Andrea Michelori immediately followed for Virtus, and they stayed in front the rest of the way.

Turk Telekom did keep the game close, but the Italians held their nerve and now return home with renewed confidence.

Dudley finished as the game's leading scorer with 35 points on 13 of 20 (65%) shooting from the floor and nine of 11 (81%) from the stripe.

Travis Best had a team-high 24 points for Virtus, who won due in large part to their three-point shooting (nine of 22, 40.9%).

Unlike Sunday, however, when they crashed to defeat at home to Lottomatica Roma, Virtus won the rebounding battle 31-25.

Michelori led the way in that department with eight.
