El-Amin And Azovmash Turn Back Dynamo Moscow Region
// 16 January 2007

Azovmash moved into sole possession of first place in Group J, Round II of the EuroCup with a convincing win over Dynamo Moscow Region.

The Russians, who rolled through the first round with five wins in six games, lost for just the second time this season in the EuroCup and Khalid El-Amin was the architect of their demise.

The explosive scorer was an impressive four of nine (44.4%) from three point range and seven of 16 (43.7%) overall en route to a team-high 19 points.

The hosts found themselves in a dogfight in the first half but took the lead for good midway through the second quarter when Serhiy Lishchuk and Robert Gulyas struck with back-to-back jump shots for a 28-24 lead.

Lishchuk's dunk with nine seconds to go in the half took his tally to nine points, and made it 35-29 in favour of the Ukrainians.

When Greek guard Panagiotis Liadellis' three-ball ripped the net just past the halfway point of the third quarter, he had 11 points and the home side were in command at 49-34.

A lay-up by Slaven Rimac then extended the lead to 55-38 with 1:14 to go in the third, the 17-point lead the biggest of the contest.

Dynamo came storming back, though, and made for an uncomfortable few minutes for the home team.

Roderick Blakney's three trimmed the deficit to 67-62 with 4:26 remaining in the contest.

That is when El-Amin came to the rescue.

The American hit two three-pointers, on the second of which he was fouled while in the act of shooting by Joshua Davis.

El-Amin calmly went to the strip and made the free throw for a rare four-point play with 2:48 to go.

That gave Azovmash a 74-62 lead and they were not challenged again.
Fedor Likholitov had a game-high 24 points in defeat for the Russians, who out-rebounded Azovmash 40-30 but were just 14 of 26 (53.8%) from the free throw line.
