BCM Gravelines missed the chance to qualify for Round II of the EuroCup as their narrow defeat to Akasvayu Girona meant BC Siauliai finished second in Group D on points difference.

A win on Wednesday would have guaranteed the French team the runners-up spot in the pool behind Akasvayu, but the already-qualified Spaniards had no mercy at the Sportica.

The match went down to the wire, although the visitors always had their noses ahead in a fourth period they started a point down (56-55).

With 59 seconds remaining, the score was level at 72-72 but then Akasvayu's Ariel McDonald came to the fore.

The 34-year-old guard nailed a lay-up with 0:35 left and in the final 10 second, he drained four shots from the charity stripe as Gravelines lost their accuracy at one end and their discipline at the other.

McDonald was the game's top scorer with 20 points, while his team-mates German Gabriel and Fernando San Emeterio both weighed in with 13 points apiece.

Rickey Paulding Jr was the inspiration for the hosts, pouring in a team-high 16 points and grabbing six rebounds.

Gravelines miss out on qualification even though they won their opening two games in the group.

Last week's 86-83 defeat to Siauliai, secured for the Lithuanians by a last-second three-pointer, ultimately proved costly to BCM.
