Estu Edge Out Dijon on Thriller
// 14 November 2006

Estudiantes showed no ill effects from their weekend mauling by Real Madrid as they claimed a thrilling 80-75 win over JDA Dijon in a battle between the top two sides in EuroCup Group A.

Both teams came into this clash with victories in their opening EuroCup games, Dijon thrashing Ironi Iscar Nahariya at home and Estu easing past CSU Asesoft Ploiesti in Romania.

However, Estu's confidence will have taken a hit by their 111-93 defeat at the hands of unbeaten city rivals Real Madrid in the ACB at the weekend.

Dijon, meanwhile, continued their good recent form with an 86-69 domestic triumph over fellow EuroCup side Adecco ASVEL in France on Sunday.

There was little to separate the teams in the first half of Tuesday's encounter in Madrid, but Estu took control after the midway point and looked to have built an unassailable lead as they moved 67-56 clear with just over seven minutes to go.

But Georgian center Vakhtang Natsvlishvili then scored six consecutive points for the visitors as Dijon went on a remarkable 14-2 run to go ahead at 70-69.

The lead changed hands on a number of occasions after that as both sides sought to gain the upper hand, but it was Francisco Mendiburu Urgell's successful three-pointer for Estu with 29 seconds to go that proved the crucial score.

Dijon were leading 74-73 at that point, but Urgell's shot put Estu back on top and they were able to stay in front until the end to record a nerve-wracking victory.

Marlon Garnett led all-scorers with 19 points for Estu while in-form center Will McDonald added 10 points and seven rebounds - all on defence.

Maleye Ndoye and Anthony Lux were the top scorers for Dijon with 17 points apiece.

Lux also grabbed six rebounds, handed out four assists and claimed two steals for his side.
