Three free throws from Luca Vitali in the last two minutes saw Italy edge a dramatic 74-70 win over Slovenia to keep their OSTCHEM U20 European Championship hopes alive in Group B.
After narrowly losing their opening contest 66-64 to Israel, the Italians fought out another close game and the sides were tied 21-21 after the opening quarter.
However, 20-year-old Vitali proved the hero of the day as he kept his cool to score twice from the free throw line with the Italians leading 69-68 with just two minutes remaining.
Then, after Emir Preldzic missed a three-pointer that would have levelled the scores for Slovenia, Vitali made one of two at the line with just 11 seconds on the clock to ensure victory.
The sides are now both tied on three points behind leaders Israel. Slovenia face Israel on Sunday evening while Italy play Hungary, with all four teams still in with a shout of reaching the quarter-finals.
Luca Lechthaler and Matteo Canavesi both scored 15 points for Italy, while Jaka Klobucar was the top scorer with 18 for Slovenia.
