Croatians Hammer Latvia

Hrvoje Kovacevic had 19 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and Croatia established a big lead in the second quarter en route to a 95-79 triumph over winless Latvia in Group A.

The Croatians, who beat Belarus in their opener, trailed 22-20 at the end of the first quarter but outscored the Baltic country 32-19 in the second for a 52-41 advantage at the break.

Ernests Kalve, who had a game-high 23 points, pulled Latvia closer at 52-46 after making a lay-up and a three-pointer but Croatia answered with a 10-1 spurt, capped by Jure Lalic's tap-in with 4:51 to go in the third to take a firm grip on the game.

For the Croatians, Marko Batina weighed in with 18 points, Andrija Stipanovic poured in 17 and Rok Stipcevic 16.

Latvia also got 20 points from Ronalds Zakis.
