Latvia completed a clean sweep of neighbours Estonia on Wednesday with a 73-64 road win in Tallinn.
Latvia qualified for EuroBasket 2005 at the first attempt, but Croatia's dominance in Group D means they will probably have to rely on additional qualifying to have any chance of making EuroBasket 2007.
Although group victory was out of the question, there was still plenty to play for, as indicated by a desperately close finish to the game.
It was Latvia who showed all the poise in the final ten minutes.
Trailing 57-56 after thirty minutes, Estonia had every chance of scoring a victory, but fell to pieces at the offensive end.
The home side hit just two field goals in the entire fourth quarter and commited 4 turnovers in a key final five minutes which saw Latvia turn a 65-62 lead into a 73-64 final score.
Kristian Kangur committed a turnover which Latvia converted into an Uvis Helmanis lay-up to take a 67-62 lead with 4:41 to play.
After missed shots from both teams, Valmo Kriisa hit two free throws to make the score 67-64, but Kristaps Valters hit a lay-up to re-establish a 5-point lead, 69-64.
On the next possession Estonia committed a 24-second violation, prompting head coach Titt Sokk to take a timeout.
Unfortunately for Sokk, the timeout didn't seem to have much of an effect. Vallo Allingu blew two free throws and Estonia committed two more turnovers to gift Latvia the win.
Helmanis led Latvia with 18 points while Valters had 17.
