GAME REPORT

Russia Earns Revenge

Russia atoned for an earlier loss to Belgium during the EuroBasket Qualifying Round by winning the second encounter between the two teams in convincing fashion, 96-63.

David Blatt’s men took charge in the second quarter, when they went on a 19-4 run to open a significant double-digit advantage.

Leading 31-27, Sergey Bykov made a lay-up. Following a basket from Belgium, JR Holden made three-pointers on two consecutive Russian possessions to make the score 39-29.

Russia continued to pour it on as Holden’s lay-up at the 3:26 mark before the half gave his team a commanding 50-31 advantage.

The teams played evenly in the third and then Russia extended the lead to more than 30 by outscoring Belgium 23-10 in the final 10 minutes.

Holden led all scorers with 22 points, while Victor Khyrapa, Sergey Monya and Aleksey Savrasenko each tallied 16.

Khyrapa had been questionable for the game entering play with a foot injury, but he was able to go and did make a solid contribution.

Russia is tied with the Czech Republic with a 4-1 record in Group C.

The two teams match-up in their final qualifying game on Saturday with an automatic berth to EuroBasket 2007 at stake.

Belgium, after their win over Russia on September 3rd, have now lost three games in a row.

They conclude play on Saturday against Hungary.
