Hosts Hungary stunned defending champions France with a come-from-behind victory at the OSTCHEM U20 European Championship Women in Sopron on Saturday evening.

Belgium, Russia, and Bulgaria were also winners, but the Hungarians stole the headlines with a 73-70 triumph after battling back from a 16-point deficit.

Jennifer Digbeu's lay-up with 18 seconds remaining in the first half gave the French a 43-27 lead and success seemed to be heading their way.

But Katalin Honti nailed a three-pointer right after to leave Hungary trailing by 13 at the break.

The Hungarians chipped away at the lead in the third quarter and when Nikolett Somogyi buried a shot from the arc with 18 seconds to go, France's advantage was only 54-52.

France were under pressure but stayed in the lead, with two free throws by Digbeu, the younger sister of former French men's international Alain Digbeu, taking the lead to 64-58 with 4:22 to go.

A three-point play from Andrea Somogyi pulled Hungary to 64-63, and after OC Auxencia's Isabelle Yacoubou made one of two at the line for France, Somogyi sank a jump shot to tie the game at 65-65 with 2:06 remaining.

A Yacoubou jumper put France back in front, but Barbara Semsei replied for Hungary with 1:29 to go to level the clash again.

Rita Ibolya Kollo made a lay-up with 47 seconds to play, and then with 19 seconds to go drilled two free throws for a 71-67 advantage to secure Hungary's famous victory.

Dora Horti led the way for Hungary with 18 points.

Hungary top Group B with two wins and have thus clinched a place in the next group stage, while France must beat Israel on Sunday to be assured of advancing.
