Lotos Triumph To Level Tie

Lotos Gdynia hit back to level their EuroLeague Women eighth-final tie with MiZo-Pecs by beating the Hungarian giants in Poland on Friday night.

Thrashed in the first leg, Lotos got strong efforts from Agnieszka Bibrzycka and Ewelina Kobryn in a 79-66 triumph.

The deciding Game 3 will be staged in Pecs next Wednesday.

Lotos have not been the strongest side in Europe this season but they were always going to be dangerous with Polish international Bibrzycka in their midst.

A key early spurt came late in the opening quarter with Lotos, who never trailed in this game, leading 11-10.

Kobryn buried a jump shot for the last points of the first quarter, and the run continued in the second. Chelsea Newton scored on a lay-up, was fouled and sank the free throw for a 16-10 lead.

Magdalena Leciejewska extended the lead further with a lay-up.

MiZo, the only side to beat defending champions Volgaburmash this season, had hoped to close out the series in two games but they found themselves playing from behind.

Lotos pushed even further ahead at 33-20 after a basket from Rankica Sarenac.

The end of the half belonged to MiZo as they went on a 10-2 surger to trail 35-30 at half-time, Anna Vajda scoring the last point of the quarter by splitting a pair of free throws.

Rankica Sarenac's jump shot at the start of the third quarter pulled MiZo to within three, but the rest of the game belonged to the hosts and Bibrzycka, who finished with a team-high 18 points.

Ewelina Kobryn (Lotos Gdynia)
Ewelina Kobryn had 15 points for Lotos Gdynia
Her three-pointer sparked a 9-0 run that put her side in control for good.

MiZo got no closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Lotos finished six of 10 from three-point range, with the great Bibrzycka four of seven.

MiZo had a nightmare from long range, making three of 18.

They were also just 11 of 17 from the line and turned the ball over 20 times to just 14 for Lotos, who must believe they have a chance of reaching the quarter-finals after this effort.

Dalma Ivanyi had a game-high 19 points in defeat.
