Lietuvos Third Quarter Romp Kills Off USVO

US Valenciennes Olympic lost their 100% record in the EuroLeague Women on Thursday as they crashed to a Katie Douglas-inspired Lietuvos Telekomas Vilnius, 79-75.

Katie Douglas (Lietuvos Telekomas Vilnius)

The French giants went into the game having won all four of their opening games but just days after losing to bitter rivals Bourges on the domestic front, they were undone by one of the top players in the competition as Douglas, Lietuvos' star guard, poured in 27 points and dished out five assists.

USVO came into the game on the back of a French league defeat to bitter-rivals Bourges and suffered more heartache.

The French won the EuroLeague in 2002 and 2004, and they look to have the makings of a side that can challenge for honours once again this season.

The first half suggested they would improve to 5-0 because after thoroughly dominating the opening quarter by a 23-14 scoreline, the Lithuanians managed to shave just two points off the margin by half-time and trailed 42-35.

Whatever coach Algirdis Paulauskas said in the changing room during the break worked because when the home team returned to the floor, they exploded into life and went on a 28-12 rampage in the third quarter for a 63-54 advantage.

Sandra Valuzyte (Lietuvos Telekomas Vilnius)

Sandra Valuzyte, Rima Valentiene and Douglas were excellent in the pivotal third quarter.

Valentiene opened the scoring in the second half with a three-pointer, and that was followed by Valuzyte's shot from behind the arc.

It was one of Douglas' five three-pointers on the night with 4:18 to play in the third quarter which gave the Vilnius team the lead for good at 50-48.

They outscored USVO 13-6 before the end of the period to seize control.

Valenciennes got no closer than six points the rest of the way.

Valentiene chipped in with 17 points for Vilnius, whose record is now 4-1.
