GAME REPORT

Khimki Pull Away For Big Win Over Lemesos

BC Khimki went on an 11-2 spurt midway through the second quarter of their Round II, Group L opener against Privatbank EKA AEL Lemesos and used the run as a launchpad for a 109-87 victory.

Khimki, one of the four Russian representatives in the competition, trailed 23-21 with eight minutes and 46 seconds to play in the first half after a basket from Michal Hlebowicki.

Oscar Torres (BC Khimki)
Oscar Torres led Khimki with 19 points
But an Oscar Torres jump shot pulled the hosts level and then a pair of Vitaly Fridzon free throws put them in front for good.

Giamarco Pozzecco added a basket for two of his 18 points, and then Torres tapped the ball in for a 29-23 advantage.

Lemesos would get no closer then five points for the remainder of the first half and they trailed 47-41 at the intermission following a lay-up from forward Balsa Radunovic.

Two Radunovic free throws would trim the deficit early in the second half to 49-47, but Khimki turned up the pressure and back-to-back three-point plays put them on their  way to the decisive triumph.

Ruben Wolkowisky scored and was fouled by Frankie King. He sank the free throw for a 52-47 advantage.

Then Venezuelan star Torres, who had 19 points in the contest, took his tally to 12 after capitalising on a Lemesos turnover.

He received a pass from team-mate Melvin Booker and dunked, while also drawing a foul. He sank the attempt from the charity stripe for an eight-point lead with 7:32 to play in the third quarter.

Lemesos would get no closer than seven points for the remainder of the contest.

By the end of the quarter, after King missed a lay-up Khimki's lead was 79-60 and there was no way back for the Lemesos.

Lemesos' Michael McDonald led all scorers with 21 points, while Torres' haul was tops for Khimki.

Alexander Petrenko, like Pozzecco, had 18 points and Wolkowisky, the Olympic gold medal winner from Argentina, had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

McDonald also had 11 rebounds on the night.

Italian international Pozzecco also had three steals in his solid performance.

Next up for Khimki is a clash in the Ukraine at Azovmash, while Lemesos will host DKV Joventut.
