Sekulic, Blakney Too Much As Maroussi Knock Off Moscow Region

24.01.2006

Maroussi Honda used an 11-0 fourth-quarter run to knock off Dynamo Moscow Region 62-57 on Tuesday and hold onto a share of first place in Group J of the EuroCup.

Blagota Sekulic and Roderick Blakney combined for 14 of Honda's 19 points in the fourth quarter, as the Greeks turned the game around with a strong start to the final period to win at home.

The victory leaves Maroussi with a 4-1 record and even with RheinEnergie Köln - 95-70 winners over Pallacanestro Cantu - for first place in the group. Dynamo Moscow Region is still winless.

Sekulic paced Honda with 17 points while Blakney had 15 for Panagiotis Yannakis' team. Alexandros Kyritsis was held to just eight points.

Nikita Morgunov was the best scorer for Moscow Region with 12 points, and Sam Hoskin chipped in with 11.

Neither team could do much in the first quarter of the defensive battle with the score 14-10 for the Russians after one.

Ivan Zoroski's free throws capped off an 8-2 run to open the second quarter for Dynamo, who left 22-12. But the Greeks climbed back and trailed just 29-28 going into the locker room.

Honda pulled ahead 41-36 midway through the third, only to see Hoskin complete a three-point play and Sergey Demeshkin knock down a three-pointer to start a 12-2 Moscow Region run to finish the quarter with a 48-43 advantage.

But that lead vanished as the Russians couldn't find their shooting form - also due to Maroussi's stifling defence. Constantinos Kaimakolglou's free throws finished the run with the score 54-48.

Stevin Smith's jumper with 3:11 remaining finally put the Russians on the scoreboard in the fourth. Hoskin's free throws closed the game to 54-52.

But Blakney's three-pointer with 41 seconds made it 62-54. And Moscow Region was unavailable to mount any further comeback.
