Narrow Defeat To Nahariya Ends Swans' Hopes

Basket Swans Gmunden put up a brave fight at home to Ironi Iscar Nahariya but they lost 77-74 - a fourth defeat in Group D which has killed off their faint hopes of progressing to Round II.

Nahariya, led by coach Avi Ashkenazi, trailed 72-71 after Peter Hutter's two free throws with a minute and 39 seconds remaining in the contest but they held their nerve.

Branko Milisavljevic made two from the charity stripe shortly after for the Israeli team to put the visitors back in front.

After Gary Buchanan misfired on a three-pointer, he fouled Avid Soucar who made one of two for a 74-72 Nahariya advantage with 35 seconds to play.

The Austrians still had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Florian Schoninger turned the ball over with 17 seconds left and Swans had to foul Barak Peleg to stop the clock with 14 ticks remaining.

He made one of two for his 14th point of the game, leaving the home side with yet another chance to tie if they could bury a shot from the arc, but it was not to be.

Nahariya opted to foul Buchanan instead of letting the hosts have a shot at tying the game, and Buchanan, with five seconds to play, made both to bring Swans to within 75-74.

Again the Gmunden team fouled to stop the clock, and Milisavljevic made both free throws for the final margin of victory.

Cory Carr and Milisavljevic each had 16 points  to lead the Israeli team in scoring.

They have improved to 3-1 in the group and have moved level with BC Khimki at the top. The Russians won at Nymburk earlier in the day.
