Czech Republic Beat Determined Greece

04.09.2005

Czech Republic maintained their 100% record at EuroBasket Women with a 54-61 win against a much improved Greek outfit.

Greece were among the minnows of EuroBasket 2003 and struggled to a 9th place finish.

However, just 2 years later and after a strong showing at the 2004 Olympics, Greece have been transformed into a team that can take on Europe's best.

Czech Republic were put under the cosh by the new-look Greeks for 27 minutes, before they produced a 12-2 run in the final quarter and clinically snuffed out any hopes of a Greek win.

Greece were the better team in the opening stages and led for most of the first half.

A 7-0 run midway through the third period gave Greece a 46-39 lead and the Czech Republic were on the ropes.

But just as Greece looked to be in control, the 2003 silver medalists sprang back to life.

Michaela Pavlickova was the spark as she scored all eight Czech Republic points in an 8-0 run to close the quarter and give her side a 46-47 advantage.

Czech Republic maintained the momentum into the fourth. Veteran center Eve Nemcova hit a jump shot to open the quarter and a Jana Vesela lay-up 5 minutes later capped a 12-2 run which put the Czech Republic firmly on top.

Pavlickova finished with 14 points for Czech Republic who will look to close out the group with a 100% record in their remaining games against Germany and Latvia.

After an opening game win against Germany, Greece have now lost 2 games on the bounce, but will be hoping to secure a quarter-final berth with wins over Latvia and Poland.
